This one day workshop explores the concepts involved with working with Aboriginal clients in a clinical environment where family and domestic violence is present. Specific cultural awareness is required for working with Aboriginal clients and for the clinical interventions within this awareness.

What is this workshop about?

This workshop is intended to enhance participants' awareness of aspects of Aboriginal culture as they apply to sensitive and effective clinical interventions in relation to family and domestic violence. It focuses on the therapeutic system, examining in particular issues of transference, counter-transference, resistance and collusion in terms of how to incorporate knowledge of these into working clinically with Aboriginal clients to address family and domestic violence.

Discussions will centre around case scenarios, and practice issues will be explored within the framework provided by the Domestic Violence Prevention Unit's Best Practice Models for working with perpetrators and victims of domestic violence, and National Competency Standards.

This workshop is designed to provide the participant with the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in:

  • Resistance
