By the end of the workshop participants will have developed an understanding of:

  • What impact having multiple problems in a client family has on their functioning as a family
  • What is required in determining what exactly the problems are that are impacting on the family
  • How important it is to engage the multi - problem family in finding their own solutions to the problems within their family
  • The need for a collaborative approach across agencies and across the sector to intervene with multi–problem families
 

This workshop is designed to provide the participant with the opportunity to develop skills in

  • Undertaking the initial assessment with multi-problem families
  • Defining in conjunction with the family the specific problems to be addressed
  • Developing a viable intervention plan to resolve the multi-problem families' identified problems
  • Establishing goals, outcome measures and time frames for achieving change within the multi-problem family

 

About the Facilitator:

Dr. Barbara Meddin is director and principal consultant, Human Service Consulting. She recently retired from the position of the Senior Professional Officer, Social Work (Principal Social Worker) for the Department for Child Protection in Western Australia. She originally came to Australia from the United States in 1984 to assist WA to establish its state-wide child protection service.

 

Dr. Meddin holds a bachelor of sociology and psychology from the University of Georgia in the United States, a clinical Masters of Social Work from the University of Kentucky, and a Ph. D. in social work and political science from the University of Illinois.

 

She has more than 30 years experience as a social worker working in the fields of child protection, domestic violence, corrections, education, economic security and juvenile services and has worked extensively for services to men, women and children and to indigenous people and has testified frequently in the Family Court and in the Children's Court as an expert witness.

 

Dr. Meddin has provided a range of training courses both overseas and throughout Australia on working with multi-problem families and is widely published both in Australia and overseas in the human service field.
