In today's working environment, workers no longer work with a client who only has just one problem. Frequently we are faced with clients who may initially contact us because they are homeless, have financial problems or perhaps come for one specific service. However, once the worker meets with the client and gets to know their situation, it becomes apparent that the individual client and their family have a multitude of problems such as mental health problems, drug or alcohol problems, perhaps family violence, parent-adolescent conflict, or there are child abuse or neglect issues present. This
one day workshop will assist participants to be able
to make an assessment of just what exactly are the problems faced by the
client and their family and to look at how to work with multi problem
individuals and families. The workshop will look at how to engage with
and collaborate with other agencies to provide services as well as look
at how the worker can know if changes are occurring and interagency collaboration
and intervention is making a difference. Opportunity will be provided to work with cases illustrative of the multi-problem families currently served by the agency.

About the Facilitator: Dr. Barbara Meddin is director and principal consultant, Human Service Consulting. She recently retired from the position of the Senior Professional Officer, Social Work (Principal Social Worker) for the Department for Child Protection in Western Australia. She originally came to Australia from the United States in 1984 to assist WA to establish its state-wide child protection service.
Dr. Meddin holds a bachelor of sociology and psychology from the University of Georgia in the United States, a clinical Masters of Social Work from the University of Kentucky, and a Ph. D. in social work and political science from the University of Illinois.
She has more than 30 years experience as a social worker working in the fields of child protection, domestic violence, corrections, education, economic security and juvenile services and has worked extensively for services to men, women and children and to indigenous people and has testified frequently in the Family Court and in the Children's Court as an expert witness.
Dr. Meddin has provided a range of training courses both overseas and throughout Australia on working with multi-problem families and is widely published both in Australia and overseas in the human service field.
